Everything you need to know before visiting Refuge du Pré de Madame Carle.

Opening Dates: March 28 to October 12, 2025

The Chalet Refuge du Pré de Madame Carle is a mountain refuge:

Breakfast is served buffet-style at a time to be specified the day before with the caretaker.

Guests on half-board should arrive by 7 p.m. for the evening meal, which consists of a set menu (starter, main course, dessert).

Sanitary facilities and hot showers are in the common areas. The refuge is supplied with water from a spring that freezes in the spring, making showers unavailable until May.

Beds and dormitories are equipped with warm duvets. Starting in May, bed linens are changed after each guest in the rooms, but not in the dormitories. We kindly ask you to bring a sleeping bag liner (silk or fabric) for comfort and hygiene, year-round for dormitory stays and in the spring for room stays.

The refuge does not provide bath towels.

Rooms do not have private bathrooms.

The refuge does not have potable water; the last controlled water point is the fountain in Ailefroide, several kilometers below. We recommend you take precautions. Note: Bottled spring water is included in the price of the evening meal for refuge guests.

The refuge is primarily powered by solar electricity. Lights go out around 10 p.m., so please bring your headlamps, extra batteries, and any other electric devices before arrival.

There is no mobile network at the refuge, and satellite Wi-Fi is reserved for the refuge’s needs. You’ll experience true disconnection during your stay!

The satellite phone network can be unreliable; in case of bad weather, you may not be able to reach us by phone. Please send us an email with your contact details, and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

At 1874 meters altitude, the weather can change rapidly, and evenings can be chilly, even in summer! Be sure to bring warm clothing and rain gear.

A free municipal parking lot is located near the refuge in the summer. During snow-covered road periods, access is by foot, snowshoes, or ski touring from the Claux Tunnel (3 hours) or from Ailefroide (2 hours).

The nearest gas station is 23 km away, at the entrance to the valley, in L’Argentière-la-Bessée.
